Middle School "Must Have"

All summer, Scytheboy has been reminding us of the "must have" items for middle school. The most talked about item has been a cell phone. Yes, a cell phone. Am I that old? Since when did a cell phone top the list of essential school supply items?

And the cell phone companies haven't made our arguments for not getting him one any easier....it now costs as little as .50 a day to arm your child with his or her own phone. A phone fully equipped with Internet access, instant messaging, text messages and voice activated dialing features. I've had my phone for two years and I still haven't figured out how to do all that stuff on mine.

And yes, we did in fact cave and get him the damn phone. First, because we were sick of hearing about how all his friends have phones and how he would only use it to call us. Second, because we lost all leverage when he looked on our provider's site and even offered to use some of his allowance for the monthly fee if he had to. So now he's got the phone of his dreams and suddenly we have a very appreciative and well behaved child. I wonder how long that will last?

My daughter (age 10) keeps begging for one. I am soooo mean! She can have one when she starts driving. Just because I caved on the ear piercing thing doesn't mean I'm a pushover. Really!

I tried to do the trackback thing, but I can't get it to work.
I posted about your post. You might find more advantages as a parent than he finds as the kid having the phone. Like being able to harrass him even when he's over his friend's house!

Tommy and I think we've fixed TypeKey. And they do have phones that can only call like three or four numbers...but they are "baby" phones and no way Scytheboy would have been willing to carry one of those!

Oh, and TypeKey is not playing nicely with your site....just saying.

If all of his friends have cell phones, then why can't he just borrow one of theirs? Man, I would not be an understanding parent. Too bad you can't set it up to just call a select few numbers, just to muck with him a little. Here is your phone, but you can only call us :)
